One year ago, I lost my best friend, Laura Sherwin. And not a day has gone by without missing her—her voice, her humor, her perspective, her fierce intelligence, and her impossibly kind heart. Laura was the person I turned to for book recommendations, big ideas, and small joys. She was steady in crisis, generous in spirit, and brilliant in ways that never demanded attention.
She made the people around her feel seen—and she believed deeply in the quiet power of stories to do the same.
Her family misses her every single day. Laura was a mother, a daughter, a wife, a sister, a friend, and a light in so many lives. There’s still a kind of silence in the spaces she used to fill—spaces that once held her laughter, her lists of books to read, her dreams of traveling the world.
Before she passed, we talked about creating something simple but meaningful—something that could carry her love of reading, connection, and curiosity forward. That became Books That Travel the World. I started this project for her. I carry it on because of her.
In the early months after her passing, I rushed to release Sherwin, the Book That Traveled the World, a children’s story that was close to my heart. But I wasn’t ready, and the story wasn’t either. Now, with time, reflection, and care, I’m proud to share the newly republished edition of Sherwin—the version I know Laura would have smiled at, maybe even laughed about, and definitely shared.
Sherwin is a book—quiet, plain, sitting forgotten on a shelf. She doesn’t have a sparkly cover or a flashy title. But she’s full of wonder and ready for a journey. One day, a curious young girl picks her up, opens her pages, and unknowingly sends Sherwin off into the world—book by book, reader by reader, country by country. Her story is shared, loved, and passed on, one hand at a time.
Sherwin’s story mirrors Laura’s spirit: unassuming, full of depth, and endlessly ready to travel.
This book is more than a story for children—it’s a tribute to Laura’s life, her legacy, and the way she moved through the world: gently, wisely, and always with an open heart.
Thank you for being part of this journey. For reading, sharing, and remembering. Laura lives on in the books that travel, and in the lives they continue to touch.
With love, Julie
